Get to Know One of Our Students

Meet Christian Sweezy, a third-year medical student pursuing his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree. A native of Lake Charles and a graduate of McNeese State University, Sweezy attends VCOM–Louisiana, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine campus in Monroe. "Osteopathic medicine programs emphasize a holistic approach to medicine," says Sweezy. "I was drawn to osteopathic medicine for its emphasis on preventive care, the musculoskeletal system, and the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit."

Beauregard Health System serves as a clinical rotation site for VCOM. "Students complete monthlong clinical rotations through primary care and many other specialties," says Edwin Bonilla, MD, Director for Student Medical Education for the program. "The rural hospital becomes their classroom and local doctors, their mentors. These students are extremely responsible and motivated, and it is a pleasure to help shape them into compassionate and effective physicians."

"I have witnessed the profound impact doctors can have on an entire community in a rural setting," says Sweezy. "Local doctors serve not just as health care providers but as pillars of support and sources of reassurance for the people they serve. I am inspired by their commitment to serve as caregivers, educators, and community advocates. I am grateful for my time at Beauregard Health System. It has enriched my education and instilled in me an overwhelming respect and admiration for the practice of medicine in a rural setting."
